The Sidecar is one of the most iconic cocktails in the world, representing the perfect balance of spirit, citrus, and sweetness. It’s a cornerstone of classic cocktail culture and a must-know for any serious bartender.
History
The Sidecar was created in Paris around 1920, likely at Harry’s New York Bar. It’s named after the motorcycle sidecar, though the exact connection remains a mystery. This cocktail helped establish the sour template that would influence countless other drinks.
The Perfect Sidecar
The traditional recipe calls for equal parts cognac and orange liqueur with lemon juice, but many modern versions use a 2:1:1 ratio for better balance. The key is using high-quality cognac and fresh lemon juice.
Tips for Success
- Use VSOP or XO cognac for the best flavor
- Cointreau is the traditional orange liqueur, but Grand Marnier works well too
- The sugared rim is optional but adds a nice textural contrast
- Serve in a chilled coupe glass for the most elegant presentation
Variations
- Brandy Sidecar: Use American brandy instead of cognac
